ABOUT ANGLICAN GIRLS’ GRAMMAR SCHOOL, UGHELLI

Like the legendry Pheonix in Greek mythology arising from the ashes of its predecessor in freshness and youthfulness to a new circle of life, the Anglican Girls’ Grammar School Ughelli, has resurrected from the rubbles of yesterday to become a full-fledge faith-based school of the Anglican Diocese of Ughelli.

This great school was founded by the Anglican Communion in the year 1960. It was under the Episcopacy of the Rt. Rev. Agori Iwe of blessed memory, the Bishop of Benin Diocese. The school thrived tremendously as one of the foremost female schools in the area. Apart from the desire for intellectual greatness, the Church wanted to combat the moral rectitude that was devastating society and to preserve the sanctity of the female child. It was a time when (to some parents,) female education was a no-go area because of the attendant issues of unwanted pregnancies that were commonwith school girls. Others felt that since the girl will definitely get married to a man and the surname will change, there was no need spending money and time to train her.

The establishment of the school therefore became a timely instrument to educate parents against the wrong notion about female education. Thus, the seed sown by our fathers began to blossom. Thus many girls who passed through the godly nurture and academic impartation of those great teachers and leaders have become great and prominent mothers and models of greatness all over the world. But as time and change will have it, the government of the then Mid-Western state (later Bendel State and now Edo and Delta States) under the Military Governor Brigadier Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia (retired) demanded for and took over all the schools that were established by the churches.

For so many years the schools were under the control of the government. The rate of negligence of the schools by government, the nonchalant attitude of some of those employed by the government to run the schools; and the increasing rate of moral decadence among the students motivated the original owners of the schools to demand for the return of their schools. Thus, on the 27th October, 2011 the Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, Ughelli was handed over to the Diocese of Ughelli Anglican Communion by the Delta State government under the governorship of His Excellency Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.

The Most Rev. Cyril O. Odutemu PhD (Ibadan), JP who is the Bishop of the Diocese of Ughelli and also the Archbishop of Bendel Ecclesiastical Province became the Proprietor of the school. He is a strong visionary leader, an erudite scholar and rare academia who is highly committed to the development of this school. We also have a very dynamic team of professional graduate teachers who are poised to impart the students with the best of knowledge required for their all-round development. The serenity and security of our environment is second to none. This is why our students are doing tremendously well both in character and learning.

The erstwhile dilapidated science laboratory now wears a new look as it has been renovated to modern standard and properly structured to facilitate learning in all the science subjects and other related subject areas.

We are proud to inform you that this school has zero tolerance for examination malpractices, sexual immorality, stealing, fighting and the likes. Our students are very composed, independent and comfortable when it comes to examination, be it internal or external. This is because they are being trained to hold personal integrity in high esteem-the very rare virtue that Nigeria needs to excel as a nation.

You are welcome to our world of excellence.
